Community Ministries Work Area
Mission
The Community Ministry Team in cooperation with the congregation as a whole takes Christ’s love into the Greater Lafayette Community by providing funds and volunteers to targeted agencies providing services to those in need. Individual team members coordinate activities with a specific agency to carry out this mission. …'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' Matthew 25:45
Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM)
LUM is a partnership of 47 congregations from 21 faith traditions that brings compassion and justice to Lafayette's needy children and families. LUM serves the community through 23 assistance programs. Cathy Potter represents St. Andrew on the LUM Board of Trustees. Lisa Tally coordinates groups within the church that cook and serve six evening meals a year at the LUM shelter.
Habitat for Humanity (HH)
HH provides an opportunity for God’s people to show their love for others by building houses that become homes for families at an affordable cost. Brad Stoller coordinates fund raising and volunteers within St. Andrew for the annual Methodist House build and represents St. Andrew on the LUM Board.
Church Women United Food Pantry
Many families and individuals in the Lafayette area depend on food pantries to feed their families. Helen Hayden is a leader and active volunteer with Church Women United and represents St. Andrew on the food pantry board. She coordinates volunteers to purchase, stock, and distribute food from the Hanna Center and Southside Community Center pantries. She also coordinates food and cash donations within St. Andrew.
Indiana Blood Center
Susan Foster coordinates Sunday morning blood drives at St. Andrew. The center depends on volunteer donors, and because the church population has a significant percentage of individuals that qualify as donors, church-based blood drives are critical to the blood supply.
Family Promise of Greater Lafayette, Inc.
We are a support church for the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), a program that brings shelter, meals, and support services to families without homes. IHN is a cost-efficient and effective community response to family homelessness in the greater Lafayette community. IHN makes use of existing church buildings and community resources. Bill Hoover represents St. Andrew.
Additional Organization Provided Financial Support
Lafayette Community Health Clinic provides medical and dental services to families without health insurance. The Lafayette Adult Resource Academy provides educational programs in reading and GED preparation. The YWCA Women’s Shelter provides a safe haven for women who can not safely stay in their homes because of spousal abuse or other reasons.
How to Become Involved
Additional team members are needed to help with the new Family Promise Program. We are also investigating the possibility of extending our outreach to residents of Tippecanoe Villa, our neighbors. For information on any of these programs or if you’d like to start a new initiative contact Bill Hoover at 743-4120, or peg4billh@yahoo.com
