The tune from Mary Poppins is still ringing in my ears. Not only did Lafayette Jeff's production of 'Mary Poppins' recently blow into town, but so has perfect weather for flying kites. And I can think of no better place to fly a kite than the wonderful grounds here where the good people of St Andrew UMC gather each week on County Road 50. There is a playful expansiveness here which lends itself to not only kite flying, but also softball, slip n' slide kickball, soccer, fetch with a dog, basketball, frisbee, tag, and so much more.
The winds were blowing strong from the developing lands to the south of here, and my wife brought along the gear to match as she was arriving for the Friday morning women's study group Oasis. She brought our son as there is child care available, but we took a brief detour to enjoy this wonderful world God has created for us.
It did not take long for my excitement and giddiness to surpass my child's. There is something rejuvenating and invigorating about being involved in raising/flying an object up, up, and beyond the concerns and worries of this world. Even though down here worry and fear and failure can swirl in gusts, steadying our gaze on somthing higher can reveal a realer and more redeeming force which raises us from such chaos. Stopping and seeing matters through children's eyes can do this. Perhaps something like this is what Jesus invited us to when he said we must be as children to enter the Kingdom of God.
It surprises me how surprised I am still when I pause from a busy day and find great refreshment in such simple matters. It is pretty cool how God makes such things available to all people. I believe the words of Isaiah may explain it the best...
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
