Come & See

A Best Friend

Written by St Andrew on . Updated

Who is it?  Who do you call your best friend? Is there someone with whom you share secrets or call upon in times of trouble?  Most people seem to have a BFF. On a short car trip, I was passing the time thinking fondly of someone who is very special to me.  As I mused and considered this dear one I wondered if this is the one I would call my “best friend.”  She is loyal to a fault, gracious, kind and always there when I need her.  She laughs and cries with me.  She supports me when I am sad and prays for me at a moment’s notice.  She is unique, and yet there are a few others in my life that could match this description.

It was certainly a lovely way to pass the time as I ticked off the miles.  One minute I was lost in thought and the next the real truth hit me right between the eyes.  There is only one who can be called my best friend.  How could I even contemplate another?  My best friend, you ask?  There is no other than my dear sweet Jesus!

Who else is always there at every call?  I don’t need a phone, a letter or an email to reach Him - nor a car, a bike or a hike.  It takes little to go to Him, just a willing heart.  He is always at my side and knows what I need way before I can even form a coherent thought.  He brings me amazing peace and comfort.  He is with me when I lay my head to rest and He pulls me upright in the morning.  He claps His hands in joy at my accomplishments and laughs out loud at my happiness.  His wonderful arms enfold me in crisis and dust me off when I fail, as He encourages me to try once again.

He sends the sunshine to fill me with His light.  He sends rain into my life to remind me to lean solely on Him.  He takes my breath away with the amazing sights and colors of this world.  My secrets are safe with Him and He understands as no other could.  His word is at my disposal and He gives me everything I need to grow in it.  Promises fill the pages and my faith in those words expands.

I could fill sheet after sheet with His magnificence and still fail miserably at the attempt.  I know only this.  He never fails, no never!  Do you need a friend?  Do you ever feel alone?  Jesus yearns for you.  He wants you by His side.  Go to Him and rest in His loving arms.  He is waiting!  Your best friend forever!

If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life!  Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose. We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah!
